Melanoma Awareness Month: SPF, Scars & the Day I Almost Left My Husband
Valentine’s Day, 2020: The Hot Date That Changed Everything
While most were sipping wine and swapping roses, I was in a surgeon’s chair having a Basal Cell Carcinoma removed from my face.
A hot date with a plastic surgeon, just not the kind I had in mind.
There were no chocolates, no romance. Just local anaesthetic, a scalpel and a hell of a lot of adrenaline.
Happy Valentine’s Day to me.
And while BCC isn’t life-threatening, that experience changed the entire course of my life.
Because after the shock of surgery… came the shame.Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
When the Bandages Came Off, So Did My Self-Worth
The moment I removed those surgical plasters and saw the scar, stitches and dried blood, my inner mean girl came out swinging.
“You were already unlovable, now look at you.”
“You’re ruined.”
“He’ll never see you the same again.”
That voice was loud.
So loud I had an exit plan, I was going to leave my husband.
Why?
Because I believed that this imperfection made me less.Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
But Let’s Be Real… That Scar Sparked My Glow-Up
A Basal Cell Carcinoma isn’t a death sentence, but it was a wake-up call.
Because that scar sent me deep into healing… skin deep and soul deep.
I turned to microcurrent facial rejuvenation treatments to support the healing of my surgical wound. And not only did I get results… I fell in love. With the science. With the skin. With the power of non-invasive skin treatments that support the body, not fight it.
And so, Glo Younger was born.
So maybe Valentine’s Day didn’t give me chocolates, but it gave me a purpose.
Delayed gratification, right?
Melanoma Awareness Month Matters - Here’s Why
May is Melanoma Awareness Month, and while I didn’t have melanoma, I do have skin that’s experienced the fear, the vulnerability, and the emotional rollercoaster of a skin cancer diagnosis.
This month isn’t about fear-mongering or shame.
It’s about awareness, prevention, and self-worth.
In Australia, over 16,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year.
The sun is strong, and your skin is worth protecting.
SPF: It’s Not Just Skincare - It’s Self-Care
We need to ditch the idea that sunscreen is just for beach days.
SPF is your daily commitment to skin health.
Whether you’re:
Driving (hello, UVA through windows)
Sitting near natural light
Walking on a cloudy day
Or literally anywhere that isn’t a pitch-black cave…
Wear the damn SPF. Every. Single. Day.
Not just for the glow.
But to prevent skin cancer, slow visible ageing and sending yourself that daily message, “I care about my future self.”
Embracing Imperfection: The Real Glow-Up
Let’s expand the convo beyond scars.
Because let’s be honest, we all have something we’ve zoomed in on too many times.
A wrinkle, a breakout, pigmentation, that one feature you swear everyone notices (they don’t, by the way).
Here’s the truth:
Your “imperfection” doesn’t make you less. It makes you more.
More real.
More human.
More radiant in your own damn way.
So whether you’re booking your skin check, applying your sunscreen for face, or staring down your reflection in a vulnerable moment…
You are not broken.
You are not unlovable.
You are powerful. You are glowing. You are worthy.
